When I left school in Malaysia with my SPM (equivalent to GCSE in UK), I was restricted to teaching or nursing, since job reservations shut us out from mainstream opportunities. I resolved to take up nursing after my 21st birthday.

After three years of general nursing, and the obligatory diploma in midwifery, I yearned to work in operating theatres. My private life precipitated my move to India in 1980 as a consequence being sent by the Malaysian government to help out in India rural clinics. In India I faced language and cultural differences so my life took a u-turn. I found it hard to adapt as the rural area was really backward.

I was a City girl when I was in Malaysia. Fair enough that I am not born in a rich family, but I am well brought up. I must say that it was a real shocked for me when I was living in India.

Sorry for being honest, I did try my best to apply to our government so that I can be transferred home, but my application had always been refused!

Weeks went past; Month went past… I started to develop the “stress” patterns. I became so rude about my patient. I got irritated easily. Things got really out of hands when I was trying to speak my half-baked Hindi… The time when I really lost it was when they sent in a child aged about three, and he looked like a skeleton… I am not kidding. Till today, I can still remember the whole situation vividly… Flies were all over him… Due to a few nightshifts… suddenly I stormed out of the ward and ran into my room to lock myself inside crying and screaming.

I had a nervous breakdown. The working hours were too long. The living condition was poor. I was homesick. I finally cracked up!

The head nurse, Vippa, knew about my situation. She was sympathized towards me, and she introduced me to an exercise that I am forever grateful to her, i.e. Yoga!

I did not know what it was, and I was reluctant to go to the Yoga classes. I never heard of it when I was in my hometown in Malaysia. I am sure there were such classes in Malaysia then. Maybe I was just to naïve to know what that was.

Vippa tried her best to encourage me to go, but she never succeeded in persuading me as “going home“ was the only thing in my mind, until she finally dragged me along to one. Yes, I do mean that she dragged me along. No, I did not mean it in a literary sense, but it was close enough!

So here I was practicing with a group of strangers of all sizes, shapes and ages! I was really very uncomfortable in my first session. Some of the postures were hurting me like hell! However, as I was there, I stayed in the class until it ended!

Amazingly, although I feel knackered throughout, my mind was clear. I felt good as if my problem and my depression were all gone!

Wow, that was a fantastic feeling that I ever had for the past months! I know that was the turning point of my life.

Since then I fell in love with Yoga. It relieved my stress totally, and there I was with a positive and happy outlook, found the love in my life!

Thus, Yoga does not only help you relieve your stress, but help you focus your mind to get what you want in life!

Yoga turns from a saver to a killer…

Jennifer Ling, a normal woman like everybody else, was plagued with horrendous acne. She suffered for seven years visiting many different specialists who tried to help her and endured several torturous processes including chemical skin peeling in her attempts to eradicate the blight of her life, Eventually she was referred to a Yoga practitioner therapist who taught her do Yoga meditations, Yoga breathing and so on. After attending a few lessons while bathing herself with herbal extracts, her skin began to clear. This “miracle” inspired Jennifer to learn more about how can Yoga be so beneficial which in this case, Yoga helps to cure her acne!

Because of her skin peeling, she suffered from depressions. She is a beautiful lady even with the skin peeling, let alone now she is cured. Thus, because she managed to escape from acne which to her, it was like a life prison that she never thought she would be able to escape!

She was cured and so she was so excited and decided to help others by promoting Yoga being a miracle cure to depression due to acne problems.

At one point she was married to myself, and she insisted to continue doing Yoga. After just seven lessons, she had miscarriages due to extreme Yoga positions that she did. That was a big blow for her. Since then she never recovered again. She was even more depressed than ever! Yoga was something that released her from her acne nightmare, but also gave her a bigger nightmare when she lost her unborn baby because of Yoga!

She locked herself in the room as she thought that she had killed her own baby!

Being a husband, I tried my best to help her see that she was not responsible for that, but she never listened.

She got so depressed that she attempted suicide twice, but luckily she was safe for both of the times.

In order to stop her from doing it again, I had to made the toughest decision in my life by sending her to the mental care home for her own good…

Now I visit her twice every week. Her situation is ups and downs. She definitely recognizes me, but she always talks to me about our baby.
Whenever I think of her, I have tears in my eyes. Her whole life was changed because of Yoga, and yet it changed also because of Yoga.

So the question remains “Does Yoga save or kill?”

Wang Ling

Ps: Brandon, I know you are a true practitioner of Yoga, and I want you to go out there and help people understand the real meaning of Yoga, and I appreciate that you are already doing it.

Will our obsession with Yoga kill us?

It’s possible, but it doesn’t have to. Our obsession with Yoga is basically what’s been causing us to feel pain all over.

Most of our times have been spent in practicing Yoga days and nights, without even realize that can be harmful. This is one of the reasons that causes you to feel pains.

You have to remember that not all sports were created equal. It is the same for Yoga. Some Yoga posture can be harmful to high-blood pressure victims while others pose threats to pregnant women. Yes all sorts of Yoga positions help to reduce stress, and this is what I am going to talk about here!

But the benefits of Yoga do not need to stop there. Yoga can increase your flexibility. I am sure you know that Yoga has various positions that act upon different parts of your body joints. It is in fact better than practicing Martial Arts. Why? Because Yoga is a light “sport” though I know that there are some cults out there teaching students to do some extreme Yoga positions. Not forget to mention too that Yoga works on joints that are never really on the ‘radar screen’ let alone exercised.

Proper Yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body too, and they “massage all organs of the body. It is maybe the only form of activity which massages all the internal glands and organs of the body in a thorough manner. This stimulation and massage of the organs in turn benefits us by keeping away disease and providing a forewarning at the first possible instance of a likely onset of disease or disorder. It is said that it can help prevent Prostate cancer.

The beauty about Yoga these days is that it is now possible to practice Yoga at the comfort of your own home?

I am not suggesting that you do some silly positions even like Cobra (Bhujangasana), Bow (Dhanurasana), Plough (Halasana), Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana), Simple Locust (Salabhasana) etc…

Perform a difficult yoga pose is challenging on its own, and it can kill sometimes if you are not careful.

You can just do some simple and basic Yoga at home. These simple Yoga poses are like lotus (Sukhasana), Mountain Pose (Tadasana), Leg Clasp (Padahastasana) and so on…

Now I leave it to you to investigate all other postures like Balance Posture (Natarajasana), Back Stretch (Paschimottanasana), Simple chest Expansion(Ardha Chakrasana), Simple Triangle (Trikasana), Simple Spinal Twist (Ardha Matsyendrasdana), Backward Bend (Supta Vajrasana), Knee and thigh Stretch (Bhadasana), Simple Fish (Matsya), Deep Relaxation (Savasana) etc.

Note though that some postures may have the word “simple” in it, but they are not necessary that simple!

You got to remember that you are dealing with Yoga here.

By doing Yoga in the right ways, you will be able to stretch the muscles and joints gently. Yoga also ensures the optimum blood supply to various parts of the body which in turns give complete detoxification on every nook and cranny. In addition, it provides nourishment your body cells. This leads to benefits such as delayed ageing, energy and a remarkable zest for life, that is what is called ageless body and timeless mind! You can also generate excellent toning of the muscles to reenergize the flaccid and weak muscle in order to repeatedly shed excess flab and flaccidity. Hence you look youthful!

Because of all these benefits, you do not suffer from stress. That is how Yoga helps to reduce your stress or people like to call it Yoga for stress relief!

Even.so many benefits brought by Yoga, how do you do it? Let’s start with getting yourself a good audio book. Something that you can practice at home with some warm-up exercises. Audio course are good as it give you the opportunities to listen to it while you are traveling on the public transport. By doing so you can focus on your calmed mind and forget everybody else on the public transport and even not paying attention to some annoying things that may happen!

See what Yoga does is to harmonize the mind with the body and this results in less stress but calmer mind to stay focus! It is now an open secret especially so among the Yogis community that the will of the mind has enabled people to achieve extraordinary physical feats, which proves beyond doubt the mind and body connection.

How often do we find that we are unable to perform our activities properly and in a satisfying manner because we are so stressed out? Do you know that stress in the number one killer affecting all parts of our physical, endocrinal and emotional systems can be corrected through the wonderful yoga practice of meditations?

In conclusions, Yoga brings a lot of benefits. The only way to reap those benefits is to do it moderately and consistently. Everything done in an excessive way is harmful!
